What a difference a year makes! A sprawling plot of dirt and dust in Kalaeloa is being transformed into a spacious, modern, state-of-the art facility named the Daniel Kahikina Akaka Department of Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. Since breaking ground in December 2021, Hunt contractors have been working tirelessly to build the structure to fulfill a longtime dream of its namesake, the late U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka.
On November 10, 2022, Hunt Companies Hawai‘i, its contractor Nan, Inc. and the Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System (VAPIHCS) celebrated the “topping off” of the 90,000-square-foot facility that will provide critically needed health care to 87,000 Hawai‘i veterans.
About 100 people who helped bring the project to fruition – from design to construction – enjoyed a lunch to commemorate the occasion and celebrate the work achieved to reach this milestone. Everyone who attended was asked to leave their mark on the project with their signature, which was framed and delivered to Hunt and its partners.
Now, the work continues to build out the interior of the building, which, along with the exterior features, pay homage to the history and culture in Kalaeloa and to the commitment of the veterans this facility will serve. The clinic is intentionally designed to be a place of connection, with pathways and signage designating areas as well as subtle symbolic features. The colors, tones and textures of the facility will be influenced by the geography of Kalaeloa and the plants that grow there, and spaces will be thoughtfully named.
Upon completion, the $120 million multi-specialty campus will offer primary and mental health care, laboratory and diagnostic services, specialty care, X-ray and a pharmacy, addressing the growing demand for services on the island. The Daniel K. Akaka VA Clinic is expected to open in early 2024.
