Akaka VA Clinic Takes Two Honors Home from AIA Honolulu Design Awards

October 15, 2025

This July, the Daniel K. Akaka VA Clinic earned two prestigious honors in the AIA Honolulu Design Awards: the Award of Merit, selected by a jury of esteemed AIA architects, and the People’s Choice Award, decided by community vote. The AIA Honolulu Design Awards have celebrated architectural excellence in Hawai‘I since 1958.

Earlier in May, the clinic was also recognized with the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Public/ Government Project at NAIOP Hawai‘i’s Kukulu Hale Awards, which highlight the state’s leading commercial real estate developments.

The Daniel K. Akaka VA Clinic, a nearly 90,000-square-foot multi-specialty facility in Kalaeloa Town, was developed by Hunt Companies Hawai‘i, which owns and manages the clinic while leasing it to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Designed by Ferraro Choi and Associates and built by general contractor Nan Inc., the clinic offers primary care, mental health services, X-ray, laboratory, diagnostic, pharmacy, urgent and specialty care for Hawai‘i’s veterans. Hunt Senior Vice President Thomas Lee led the development team for the VA’s Pacific Islands Health Care System.

“Long before any professional awards were bestowed on the Daniel K. Akaka VA Clinic, we were confident that Ferraro Choi had designed a healthcare facility worthy of the 17,000 military veterans who live in West O‘ahu and the more than 87,000 veterans throughout the Pacific,” said Lee. “We thank AIA Honolulu for recognizing the innovative design of this critical community asset.”
