More than 50 residents and guests filled the lawn at Wākea Garden Apartments to enjoy the classic holiday film “Elf” over the long Christmas weekend. Movie-goers put out their lawn chairs and picnic mats to watch the holiday favorite, which was displayed on a large projection screen on the lawn between the two buildings. This was the second year of the holiday movie night.
As Buddy the Elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” and the Wākea community spread holiday joy by sharing freshly popped popcorn and fluffy cotton candy with guests. Attendees had a chance to win gift cards, a Nintendo Switch, Apple AirPods, a hoverboard and a 4K TV to name a few of the night’s prizes. Every household also received a gift, courtesy of Hunt Companies Hawai‘i.
Residents got into the holiday spirit with a doordecorating contest. Tenants had the opportunity to show off their creativity to their neighbors, and decked their doorways with lots of wrapping paper, tinsel and lights!
Hunt renovated the World War II-era bachelor quarters and reopened Wākea Garden Apartments to renters in 2020. Today, roughly 100 renters occupy the units.
