Hunt Capital Partners Helps Welcome New Residents to First Permanent Housing in Lahaina Since 2023 Fires

March 26, 2025

Lahaina’s community recently took a significant step forward with the opening of Kaiāulu O Kūku‘ia, now home to approximately 130 families. This marks a positive milestone in the town’s recovery, 19 months after the August 2023 fires that destroyed more than 2,000 homes and structures and claimed over 100 lives.

For many families directly displaced by the disaster, the availability of these permanent homes provides much-needed relief and hope. Affordable housing has long been a challenge in West Maui, but this new development signals renewal and resilience as the community continues to rebuild stronger than before.

Right before Christmas of last year, the first round of Kaiāulu O Kūku‘ia residents received welcome baskets from Hunt Capital Partners in collaboration with University of Hawai‘i Maui College, ThirtyOne50 Management and CVS/Longs.
The baskets – assembled and personally delivered by some 80 volunteers – included home goods from cookware and linens, to night lights and cleaning supplies.

Kaiāulu O Kūku‘ia is a 200-unit affordable rental community being developed by Urban Housing Communities (UHC), Ikaika ‘Ohana, CVS Health and Hunt Capital Partners, Hunt’s tax-credit syndication division. Construction continues with the complex expected to be fully occupied by this summer.

Hunt is grateful to have collaborated with the community and its partners to create affordable housing for local families statewide, but particularly now on Maui, which needs so much additional support.

Kaiāulu O Kūku‘ia is one of Hunt Capital Partners’ 24 projects in Hawai‘i with 12 different developer partners, with projects on Maui and Kaua‘i expected to close in early 2025.

“Hunt Capital Partners is committed to channeling investor equity to support our network of developer partners, driving the creation of essential affordable housing for families and seniors statewide,” said Dana Mayo, executive managing director of Hunt Capital Partners.

Since 2010, Hunt Capital Partners has developed 1,826 new or renovated affordable homes across every county in the state, providing housing for approximately 5,819 island residents and making a meaningful impact on local communities.
