Central O‘ahu keiki are now enjoying a brandnew play structure, made possible in part by Hunt Military Communities’ generous donation of equipment.
George F. Wright Wahiawā D istrict Park reopened in June, just six weeks after an act of arson destroyed the playground. The crime was especially disheartening, as the playground had only recently undergone renovations before the incident.
Hunt Military Communities repurposed a play structure that previously served the community center at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Hokulani neighborhood. This repurposing followed a recent upgrade to the Hokulani playground, reflecting Hunt Military Communities’ dedication to creating neighborhoods Navy and Marine families are proud to call home.
Although the playground equipment was removed from the Hokulani neighborhood, its components remained in good, safe condition, making them ideal for reuse.
It took a collective effort to restore the torched park and bring it back to life for Wahiawā families. Hunt Military Communities was proud to contribute alongside Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Inspired Play Hawai‘i, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, Councilmember Matt Weyer, Goals Hawai‘i and Nylawn.
“Hunt Military Communities is deeply committed to enhancing the lives of those within the communities we serve. When we learned about the fire at Wahiawā District Park, we saw an opportunity to stand with our neighbors by donating salvaged playground equipment from Hokulani,” explains Katie Stephens, development manager. “By repurposing these materials, we are not only supporting the City’s efforts to rebuild but also demonstrating our dedication to sustainability and community collaboration. It’s our honor to contribute to a brighter, more joyful future for Wahiawā’s families.”
In a show of appreciation, the Honolulu City Council honored Hunt and the project partners at Honolulu Hale on Aug. 6. The official certificate said, in part, “Be it resolved that the Honolulu City Council hereby celebrates the community resilience and teamwork in the rebuilding of the Wahiawā District Park playground; and be it further resolved that the Council extends its heartfelt gratitude to…all the community volunteers for their collective generosity, leadership and unwavering dedication that turned tragedy into triumph for the children and families of Wahiawā.”
