Hunt Welcomes Tropics Restaurant, Begins Upgrades of Hawai‘i Kai Shopping Center

December 17, 2025

Hawai‘i Kai Shopping Center continues to see steady, positive progress each month as Hunt Companies Hawai‘i remains dedicated to enhancing this longstanding East Honolulu landmark. The latest development is the opening of Tropics Restaurant and Craft House, which is now serving customers in a 5,100-square-foot marina-front location, offering American fusion cuisine with a tropical flair. The eatery is known for its islandinspired dishes and refreshing cocktails in an incomparable waterfront setting.

This summer, Hunt acquired the leasehold interest in Hawai‘i Kai Shopping Center and promptly initiated a comprehensive assessment of the 145,000-square-foot property. This evaluation laid the groundwork for strategic improvements, both large and small, with roof repairs among the upcoming projects.

From the beginning, Hunt focused on building strong relationships with the approximately 30 stores, restaurants and services at the center to better understand their needs and identify ways to provide support. Shortly after acquiring the property, the team engaged in one-on-one meetings with each tenant to foster open communication.

To better support tenants and share their news with the community, Hunt will soon launch a new center website and social media presence.

“We are here to provide the resources, support and care needed for the tenants to flourish and be an integral part of the Hawai‘i Kai community,” explains Michael Lam, Hunt senior vice president.

Built in the early 1980s, Hawai‘i Kai Shopping Center is anchored by Safeway, Longs Drugs, Queen’s Health Care Centers and McDonald’s.

Fronting the Hawai‘i Kai Marina, it is an essential resource for both locals and visitors as a community and jobs center.
For over 30 years, Hunt and its affiliates have developed and financed properties across the state through innovative use of underutilized spaces and a dedication to master-planned communities and community centers. Hunt developed and continues to own and operate ‘Āhiumanu, the fully occupied, award-winning neighborhood center on the North Shore of Kaua‘i. These projects further exemplify Hunt’s dedication to serving the needs of both individuals and communities across the islands.
