Moss Construction’s (Moss) building of Mililani I Solar was given the highest honor from the General Contractors Association of Hawai‘i — the Build Hawai‘i Award of Excellence in the Environmental Category.
Mililani I Solar, which was completed on schedule, is the first utility-scale solar-plus-storage project in operation on O‘ahu. The 50-megawatt project is located on approximately 150 acres of Mililani Agricultural Park.
According to GCA Hawai‘i, the annual Build Hawai‘i Awards recognize members that “build the state’s most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, municipal and utilities, and federal and heavy divisions.”
The solar project was Moss’ first of this scale and complexity in Hawai‘i. It included load-shifting battery storage to provide greater flexibility and resiliency to the power grid. The storage is a critical enhancement as it allows for retention of excess energy produced during the day to support increased demand in the evening. According to the Hawai‘i State Energy Office’s Energy Directory, Mililani I will provide renewable energy for over 15,500 homes.
