Navy Families Enjoy New Playgrounds at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

June 20, 2024

Families in ‘Ohana Military Communities Navy neighborhoods of Moanalua Terrace and Makalapa are enjoying brand new playgrounds that appeal to children of all ages.

The “destination” playgrounds with expansive play areas also help create community hubs where relationships can be forged – where children can play together as their parents enjoy camaraderie with their neighbors.

The $600,000 project was completed in mid-January.

In addition to the playgrounds, amenities at Catlin Park Community Center underwent significant renovations, including the installation of sport-court tiles on an existing outdoor basketball court and the addition of pickleball lines to the newly resurfaced tennis court. Three playground surfaces in the Catlin Park neighborhood were upgraded with new pour-in-place surfacing.

As part of the 10-month project, the McGrew Point neighborhood now boasts a rejuvenated painted play area, complete with puzzles, mazes and obstacle courses created to encourage creativity and imagination play, while further developing problem-solving skills. All outdated playground equipment was removed in the process.

‘Ohana Military Communities is committed to creating neighborhoods that Navy families are proud to call home. The playground projects are part of its overarching community development plan to ensure safe amenities and welcoming gathering areas for residents and their families.
