‘Ohana Military Communities has begun work on more than $73 million in renovations to Navy and Marine housing in Hawai‘i. Significant projects are underway at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH), Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i (MCBH) and Pacific Missile Range Facility – Barking Sands (PMRF) on Kaua‘i.
In Navy JBPHH communities, renovations totaling about $53 million include roof replacements for some homes in Pearl City Peninsula; installation of air-conditioning units in several historic communities within the Ford Island neighborhoods of Luke Field and Nob Hill, as well as in the historic homes in Hele Mai; new vinyl privacy fencing for every home in Halawa; and playground replacement at Halsey Terrace.
At the Navy’s PMRF, ‘Ohana Military Communities is installing air-conditioning units in the Kauhale a Limaloa neighborhood.
The JBPHH Hokulani neighborhood is undergoing a $29 million revitalization. A new destination playground will be created, along with new common-area landscaping around the community and restored planter beds around the homes.
Other exterior improvements include roofing replacements, exterior painting and installation of privacy vinyl fencing to create large backyard areas for all residents. ‘Ohana Military Communities is also making a significant investment in infrastructure, updating irrigation and sewer systems.
Along with the exterior improvements, individual Hokulani units will be refreshed with new flooring, air-conditioning units, ceiling fans, upstairs windows, all-LED lighting and water heaters. Plumbing will also be updated.
In Marine communities, more than $18.5 million in renovations will include the Phase 2 continuation of exterior painting in the Pa Honua neighborhood at MCBH. In the Hawai‘i Loa neighborhood for junior enlisted Marines, some 237 homes will soon be updated with new kitchen and bathroom cabinets, fixtures and countertops. The project also includes new flooring throughout, all-LED lighting and a fresh coat of exterior paint.
‘Ohana Military Communities constantly works to identify improvements that increase energy efficiency and advance water conservation initiatives, with the intent of investing the cost savings in amenities for residents.
As an example, this year, ‘Ohana Military Communities began replacing older, inefficient air-conditioning systems. Each new high-efficiency AC unit is projected to save approximately $80 to $100 per month, and ‘Ohana Military Communities could reduce whole home consumption by as much as 20%.
