‘Ohana Military Communities is embarking on $36 million in capital improvement projects this year at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) and Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i (MCBH). These projects will add to an existing and extensive recapitalization program – for a total of $50 million investment in 2025.
‘Ohana Military Communities – which owns more than 7,000 units of military housing across Hawai‘i and is the largest owner of military housing in the U.S. – is constantly investing in its residences as part of Hunt’s commitment to quality housing for the servicemen and women who protect our country.
A multi-phase flooring project will start in 2025 and aim to replace carpets in roughly 2,400 homes in five JBPHH communities: Battleship Cove, Ford Island Landing, Maloelap, Catlin Park and Hele Mai.
In addition to interior renovations, this year’s JBPHH projects also focus on enhancing exterior features to improve neighborhood curb appeal and marketability. These projects include road repairs in the Radford Terrace, McGrew Point and Halsey Terrace neighborhoods; new fencing in Camp Stover; and exterior painting in Pearl
City Peninsula.
Lastly, ‘Ohana’s sustainment plan includes normal asset replacements with new heat pump water heaters in Doris Miller Park, Catlin Park and Maloelap and new high-efficiency AC systems (20.5 SEER) in Camp Smith. These energy efficiency improvements will help reduce energy costs – part of the ‘Ohana Military Communities’ vision to create more sustainable housing.
At MCBH, ‘Ohana Military Communities is developing an interior renovation project for the Hawai‘i Loa neighborhood – a $17 million project that will start in the summer. The first Marine residents are expected to receive their housekeys in the second half of this year.
“We are honored to provide members of the Armed Forces and their families with quality living experiences and top-tier services when entrusted with meeting their housing needs,” shares Brent Arakaki, director of development for Hunt Military Communities.
The 2025 projects are providing steady work for local contractors as ‘Ohana Military Communities invests resources across neighborhoods throughout its statewide military housing portfolio. Dozens of local construction subcontractors and hundreds of skilled tradespeople – in addition to more than 200 of its own employees – work on ‘Ohana Military Communities properties each day, helping to create desirable places to call home.
