Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a dedicated nonprofit, has made a significant impact in Hawai‘i by providing handmade beds for 30 children, a feat made possible by their expanded operations in a 4,000-square-foot warehouse in Kalaeloa Town, generously provided by Hunt Companies.
The 501(c)3 nonprofit settled into the warehouse space earlier this summer, then celebrated in July with its largest build event ever.
As a national organization, SHP has built and delivered fully furnished beds to more than 200,000 needy children across the country. The Hawai‘i chapter was founded by George Denise and his wife, Dariel Hoapili Denise, in late 2022— but a lack of dedicated space hampered its dreams of expansion.
“Thanks to Hunt believing in us and making this wonderful warehouse available, we now have a dedicated space to host large-scale build days and to store completed beds ready for delivery,” says George Denise.
Previously, SHP would spend significant time arranging for temporary building sites and storage; now it can focus solely on the actual building and delivery of beds.
The group estimates that more than 10,000 local keiki do not have beds – up to 5% of the population. The nonprofit believes that children, having their own bed, helps define their home and provides them with a safe space where they can recharge every night.
“Hunt is committed to giving back to the community to better the lives of island families,” explains Mike Lam, Senior Vice President of Hunt Companies Hawai‘i. “With this warehouse, we look forward to seeing Sleep in Heavenly Peace stabilize its operations and assist even more needy island keiki.”
